In a fascinatingly bravado frank staff editorial earlier this month, editors of The Mac Weekly at Macalester College confirmed a fairly recent op-ed on the ill effects of DIY body modification was NOT copied from another student newspaper. Then, diseases like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, tuberculosis and tetanus sneak into your body and can cause serious complications. … If you really want a tattoo or piercing, you owe it to your future self to get it done safely bravado and beautifully. And also because staph infections suck.”
Yet, after receiving the email heads-up about the “potential issue of plagiarism” and reviewing the Mac Weekly bravado and Earlham Word pieces closely, Mac Weekly editors “concluded that the articles, though addressing the same topic, are distinct from one another.”
“The reason we want to make you, reader, aware of this issue is twofold. First, one of our goals as an independent student bravado newspaper is transparency with our readership. We want you to feel comfortable knowing that we share with you what goes on in the production and management of this paper. Second, we want the Macalester community to be fully aware that we are constantly concerned with how we navigate the grey areas surrounding the issue of plagiarism. Though it is rare that an accusation such as this one comes about, bravado we are always working to make sure that our content is no one s work but our own.”
Is erring on the side of transparency the right call here? Or is it a waste of column inches, web space and readers’ time simply to tell them everything’s A-OK with something they knew nothing about and didn’t care about to begin with? Separately, is it maybe a tad insensitive to name a staffer and align her long-term with a Google print involving plagiarism — even if the whole shebang is focused on defending her integrity? And, bigger picture, what is the line between an ethical adaptation of a cool story idea and what is sometimes referred to as plagiarism of thought? bravado Put another way, when does DIY journalism morph into intellectual theft?

A new way to build membrane-crossing pores, using Lego-like DNA building blocks, has been developed by scientists at UCL, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Cambridge and the University of Southampton.
The approach la martina provides a simple and low cost tool for synthetic biology and the technique has potential applications in diagnostic devices and drug discovery. The research is featured in the current issue of the journal Angewandte Chemie .
Membrane pores are the gateways controlling the transport of essential molecules across the otherwise impermeable membranes that surround cells in living organisms. Typically made from proteins, pores of different sizes control the flow of ions and molecules both and in and out of the cell as part of an organism's metabolism.
Our understanding of membrane pores comes both from the study of both natural pores, and from equivalent structures built in the lab by synthetic biologists. But synthetic proteins are notoriously difficult to handle la martina due to the complex and often unpredictable ways in which their structures can fold. Even minor protein la martina misfolding changes a protein's properties, meaning that building synthetic pores out of proteins can be risky and time-consuming.
A more straightforward approach is so-called 'rational engineering' using Lego-like DNA building blocks. Although generally known as life's genetic code, DNA strands, which are chemically much simpler than proteins, are far easier and more predictable la martina to work with than proteins. As such they are a useful material for building nanoscale structures in the lab.
"DNA is a construction material that follows very simple rules", said Dr Stefan la martina Howorka (UCL Chemistry). "New nanostructures can be easily designed using a computer programme, and the elements fit together like Lego bricks. la martina So we can build more or less whatever we like."
Using this approach, the team built a tiny tube measuring just 14 nanometres along and 5.5 nanometres across (around 10,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair). This formed the main part of their artificial nanopore. However, to insert the tube into a cell membrane , a key challenge la martina had to be addressed: the water-soluble DNA-based structure will not embed itself into the greasy membrane which is composed of lipids.
To overcome this, the scientists chemically attached to the DNA tube two large anchors, made of molecules which have a natural affinity for lipids. These structures were then able to embed the tube into the membrane. These structures, which are based on naturally derived porphyrins, were designed by a group led by Dr Eugen Stulz (University of Southampton).
"Porphyrin molecules have ideal characteristics for our purposes," Stulz explains. "They are a strong la martina membrane anchor, which locks the nanopore securely into the lipid membrane. In addition, they are fluorescent, which means they are easy to see and study. This makes them superior la martina to other technologies."
The ability to create synthetic channels through lipid membranes enables numerous applications in the life sciences. la martina In the first instance, DNA nanopores la martina are of great interest la martina for biosensing, such as rapid DNA analysis.
But tailored pores can also be expected to aid the development of new drugs. Prototype drugs are typically designed to affect a biological target, but are not engineered to cross the cell membrane . Self-assembled pores provide a route for drugs to pass into cells, allowing for much faster pre-clinical screening for activity.

My first non-ear piercing was in my left nostril. Apprehensive of actual piercing parlors, I got it done with a gun at an Indian beauty parlor where the aftercare instructions mimicked the sort doled out by most mall employees post ear-piercing. What a mistake that was. My piercing got infected several times, took forever to heal, and discolored fluevog the skin around my nose stud. Thankfully, I knew better by the time I got my next piercings. I didn’t find it hard to wear a bra after my nipple piercings. In fact, I had to when I slept. But I do wish I’d gotten them both at once. After knowing how much it hurt, it was hard to psych myself up for the second one. Also, they might have matched better. : /
